Happy Nyonyas, Yellow Umbrella

05 Jul

Entitled “Happy Nyonyas with A Yellow Umbrella”, this watercolor work of mine reflected the happy expression of two ladies. Wonder what they were laughing about? Me too. Perhaps they were actually shy when someone asked them to pose for a picture.. Perhaps they were reminiscing the good old times when they went to school together.. Perhaps they were just happy to be with each other as they were aging gracefully and could still fit their old kebayas.

It was the ladies’ expression that drew me to paint them on paper. And I also love what they were wearing. It was so typical of Nyonya to wear such traditional dresses and we don’t get to see a lot of them anymore now in Kuala Lumpur. However these dresses are still in fashion especially for going to formal events and such. We could also ditch the sarong and wear jeans or pants with the lovely top.

But hey, it won’t be as lovely as the traditional way, of course..

But whatever it is, back to my ‘Happy Nyonyas..”. It is now not with me anymore. This painting was given as a departure gift by a  group of thoughtful friends to Mr. Moaz Ahmad. Thanks to Mr.Chang & friends for your support to local Art… my Art. They had a farewell party and kind enough to mention me at the USJ Forum.

Bye-bye nyonyas..

Really wonderful painting. The ladies seem to be so full of joy and goodwill.

Their mood accurately captured & depicted.

Wish I could paint like you.
